chapter 17 _ zara feeds herself

Zara didn’t know what to write for her assignment. Inspiration was a stubborn metaphysical creature. Some magic unicorn. It was a magic trick the mind played on the brain to get it to give enough of a shit to keep at the bloody task in the expectation that something might come of it should one not scream fuck it and do something else. Zara was only inspired by the fact that it had to be handed in the next day. ...

... for thousands of years giving examples of a few other stories similar to Lot and how making it holy writ had not helped little girls over the years. And still today, a child was in danger of being raped by her or his father, stepfather, uncle or friend of the family. Sometimes by a stranger.

Billy saw Sally watching him in the mirror. She was sitting with a book and smiling. Looking quite pleased with herself.
“What.”
“You are shaving.” ...

... “Cool.”
“You are such a goofball.”
“You are so beautiful. I can’t help it.”

Blussah stood naked in front of his closet mirror to take stock of what he saw. He was a little disgusted with himself. He wasn’t a fan of New Years resolutions but he thought often about a friend that had had a triple bypass surgery after a serious heart attack. The biggest killers in the States, as in many countries that had plenty of shitty food, heart disease and diabetes. He put his drink down and wondered how it had gone so far. ...

... He opted for babbletube and looked for beginner’s cooking shows. He ended up having a few more cigarettes and a few more drinks before flopping into bed with the hope that the phone would not ring before noon.

“Where would you like to spend New Years.”
“Far away from crowds. I don’t like New Years. I’d be happy to do it here with you. We’ll watch from the window.”
“It’s a great show from the roof.” ...

... “They have Internet in Costa Rica.”
“Of course they do.”
“So get dressed. Let’s go.”
“Are you going naked.”

Franco was becoming a good detective. His first case seemed to be a loss but he had done well after that. No detective solved every crime. There were some crimes that had no answers. If the killer had no connection to the victim and the weapon disappeared, often there was nothing to go on. It wasn’t like on TV. A cigarette with DNA left by the killer. Jesus. If they would only be so considerate. ...

... All speculation. He went back to thinking of his most recent case. An armed robbery gone bad. Two dead. A little bit of cash and two bottles of good rum.
“This city is driving me crazy.”
“It’s driving everyone crazy, Franco.”

Parker Peter of the NYPD had been sitting at his computer all morning when his partner plopped a coffee mug on his desk.
“Thanks Lois.”
“You haven’t moved for half a day. What’s up.” ...

... “What is he doing with the bodies.”
“If that is what’s happening.”
“Yes, of course. Just speculation. But bloody hell.”

“Captain. I got a question. Have a question.”
The captain laughed.
“Anything to do with a lucky rabbit’s foot.”
“It’s weird he got it all the time. Even when he sleeps.”
“There are odd things happening on Ward 6.” ...

... “I’m too old to get started again. I like it here. I meet the nicest people. I would be no better off in an old folks home that I can’t afford.”
Randy looked around.
“Really.”
“Yes. I’m here to stay.”

King David gave Zara a big smile when he saw her approaching.
“Hello Princess. Looking good.”
“Hello my Lord.”
King David laughed and patted his throne to indicate Zara was welcome to sit. ...

... “It might be a better world without us. Don’t you think.”
“Might be right, Zara. But I isn’t sure.”
King David knew why Zara could imagine it. She was in love with one of the farm animals.

Sally and Billy were a couple days away from Hong Kong. They had spent a lot of time sleeping or lazing on the deck. Sally didn’t neglect her training. She thrived on being fit. Billy wasn’t as keen on training his body. He did some training every day but his obsession was with information. One of the hits in Hong Kong was very well paid. That always meant it was hard work. Billy would need to know all the details. ...

... in the summer. Can you get some time off. Maybe we can meet up in Paris. I hear it’s nice in the spring. Or somewhere else. Not sure what to say. I’ll write a story and read it to you when you come. Don’t forget me yet.
Love.
